A recent Consumer Reports National Research Center poll of 1,037 adults showed that a third of those who currently take a drug said they experienced a spike in their prescription drug prices in the past 12 months—anywhere from just a few dollars to more than $100 per prescription. With the rising drug costs, people are always looking for a good deal on their essential medications. Even those with insurance may face higher out-of-pocket costs as co-pays and deductibles increase.

Try Costco. If you aren’t going to use insurance, Costco has been known to consistently offer some of the lowest prices among retailers.
Support independent stores. You may not think that mom and pop stores will sell items for anything less than the retail price, but this is a common misconception to make. Some real bargains can be found at local independent pharmacies, as well as some higher prices. Another advantage of these independent stores is that people have much more luck asking for a lower price, where pharmacists might have more flexibility to match or beat competitor’s prices.
Always ask. Usually, just asking ‘is this your lowest price?’ can open up a whole new realm of discounts! Prompt the person on the phone or in the store to dig a bit for any available discount programs, cards, or coupons. Check back often, because prices and offers may change.
Talk to your doctor about costs. If the costs are getting too much for you, don’t be afraid to speak up. Doctors likely won’t broach the topic of price, so it’s your responsibility to bring it up.
