Dispelling Common Breast Cancer Myths This Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Common cancer myths and misconceptions to understand.

Did you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month? During this month individuals, communities, and organizations take time to raise awareness about this disease and support those living with it. Like most cancers, there are several myths and misconceptions floating around about who can get breast cancer and what causes it. These myths can impact who and how often people seek advice and treatment. Today, we look at the facts behind these common myths so that you can better understand the disease.

Myth: I can’t get breast cancer because it doesn’t run in my family.

This is a very common myth. Although family history plays an important role in disease development, most breast cancer is not hereditary. While living a healthy lifestyle can improve your chance of escaping the disease, even today, we don’t know what causes most breast cancers.

Myth: I am too young to get breast cancer.

Although aging is a risk factor for breast cancer and it is true that most breast cancers occur in older women, this statement is false. Young women can develop breast cancer. Women of all ages need to pay attention to their breasts, perform self-exams, and report any unusual changes to their doctors.

Myth: Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer.

Only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. Even if you find a persistent lump in your breast, it doesn’t mean that you have cancer. However, a lump should never be ignored. It’s important that you visit a physician for a clinical breast exam.
