Will Medicare-For-All Hurt the Middle Class?

Exploring what Medicare-for-all would mean.

With so much discussion of new government-controlled health insurance systems like Medicare-for-all, it can be tough to understand what this would actually mean for the public. When politicians say “Medicare-for-all”, they are talking about a one-size-fits-all system. But what does this look like for all class systems?

Medicare-for-all could mean that working families are slammed with unaffordable tax hikes while pushing everyone off their current plan. It could also subject Americans to wait longer for lower quality of care. Additionally, it would take away the choice and control Americans currently enjoy under our system, where market-based coverage and government programs work together.

John Holahan, a health policy expert at the nonpartisan Urban Institute agreed that such a system would hit the middle class. “Even though high-income people are going to pay a lot more, this has to hit the middle class.” Several other economists who specialize in health care say it is difficult to predict how most Americans would be impacted, given far-reaching effects to the nation’s two most complicated systems, health care, and taxes.
